SOCA/WOMS 290/490: Women in Poverty
Course Goals
|
- To improve our understanding of the institutional context of poverty as it
affects women and children the predominant group of people in poverty in
Wisconsin and throughout the world.
- To improve our understanding of all systems of inequality, and the
interactions among various dimensions of inequality in society.
- To improve our ability think critically and creatively about social inequality
by hearing a variety of perspectives, including the perspectives of women whose
lives are affected by poverty. To understand how the systems that create
poverty affect the lives of all members of society those living with poverty and
those living without poverty.
- To better understand the mechanisms for social change, including the role of
social activism in promoting change. To see the complexity of social change and
the potential for unanticipated consequences.
- To improve college level skills in reading, thinking, listening, speaking
before a group, writing, and computer literacy.
NOTE
As a Women's Studies course, this class will be taught using
feminist teaching methods. Be prepared to be a member of
a learning community, not a member of an
audience. As a distance learning class, this learning community will
include students at three other campuses UW-Eau Claire, UW-
LaCrosse, and UW-Milwaukee. It will include scholars throughout
Wisconsin who will join the class for particular sessions.
