final exam: SOCA 354: Class, Status, and Power
Spring, 2004      Dr. Mary Kay Schleiter

BEGIN THE DISCUSSION EARLY. YOU HAVE UNTIL MIDNIGHT ON THURSDAY, MAY 13, TO COMPLETE YOUR CONTRIBUTION TO THIS FINAL EXAM DISCUSSION.

The final exam is a structured discussion on our internet discussion site.

The question for discussion is: "How can you apply the theories and concepts from our class to an analysis of the current news story of prison abuses by the U.S. military in Iraq?"

Your contribution must include the following THREE DIMENSIONS:

  • information from newspaper accounts which you find on Lexis Nexis. Lexis Nexis is a data base which our library subscribes to, which indexes newspaper articles from around the world. Include at least one newspaper account from a source outside the U.S. and at least one from in the U.S. These will give you some evidence of the facts of the case as well as evidence of the social construction of reality among different groups.
[Once you are in Nexis Lexis, click on "Guided News Search." To reach Nexis Lexis from an off campus computer, enter your UW Parkside email ID and email password. Don't wait until the last minute to do this. The server is sometimes down.]
  • discussion of how the theorists we have studied in this part of the course might have analyzed this news story. Include theorists other than the one you researched.
  • analysis of the news story and the various newspaper interpretations of the story using theories and concepts from the text. Include page numbers when you cite these theories and concepts.

Be sure to make this a discussion. Read and respond to other students. Abide by the discussion rules on the class syllabus.
