Paper 2: Analysis of Census Data

Due by MIDNIGHT on December 17.

Present as much description and analysis about your approved research question as can be answered using U.S. Census Data.

Your paper should be well-organized, with

  • an introduction which briefly describes the county and presents and explains your research question;
  • a description of the county in terms of your key variables and the population you are studying -- in 1990 and 2000; (In describing the county, use percentages to put numbers into perspective.)
  • an analysis of the relationships among the variables;
  • a discussion of the change between 1990 and 2000;
  • a discussion of what this means in terms of the characteristics of the county.
  • Turn in your paper, in a WORD or WORDPERFECT file, via the drop box.

Be sure to:

  • cite all sources of information, including the exact table information;
  • use ASA format as described in the California State University Style Guide;
  • turn in a final draft which is free of spelling and grammatical errors and reflects a high level of professionalism.
  • While length is not part of the grade, most well-researched papers will be 5-7 pages in length.

HINTS FOR A BETTER PAPER

Avoid plagiarism. Read this Indiana University web site and consult it frequently to avoid plagiarism! Plagiarism results in an automatic "F" for the class.

Plagiarism: What It is and How to Recognize and Avoid It

Statements of FACT which are not common knowledge (like ice is cold) should be cited.  By that, I mean that the statement needs to be followed by a reference (table number and web site) of the documentation of this fact.  The complete citation should then appear in your reference list.
The reference list, at the end of the paper, should be in alphabetical or numerical order. For this paper, an extensive bibliography is not necessary. You will site particular census tables.
Unlike these instructions, your paper should not make recommendations about what people or organizations should do.  Please search for the word "should" and if you find a recommendatin for action or policy, take it out of the paper.
Social science research is based on statistical or logical inferences.  Therefore, like research in many other fields including much of biology and astronomy, we do not prove things.  We present evidence.  The evidence either supports or fails to support statements or hypotheses.  Search for the word "prove" and take it out of your paper.
Know the difference between "affect" (a verb meaning to make a difference) and "effect" (a noun meaning result or outcome).
The word "Caucasian" comes from 17th Century racist assumptions and is problematic. Please use "European American" or "White." The term was once used by Anthropologists and Biologists, but its scientific use has been dropped.
