The
trip begins in Accra, the capital of Ghana.
At the University of Ghana-Legon, at the outskirts of Accra, we
will learn about Ghanaian drumming and dance from members of the university’s
professional arts faculty, and receive instruction in Twi, one of the
major languages in Ghana. We will visit the city’s Cultural Center, artists’
galleries, and a glass bead craft workshop.
From Accra we will travel to Kumasi, the center of the Asante people,
well known for Kente cloth weaving and wood carving.
In Bonwire village we will visit the homes and workshops of weavers
and woodcarvers. Moving north
to Tamale, we will learn about the peoples and cultures of the north,
visit with a local chief and with women in a village outside the city.
A side trip to Mole Game Reservation provides a chance to see large
animals; and another side trip takes us to villages near the border of
Burkina Faso. We will then
return to the coast, with visits to the historic slave castles of Cape
Coast and Elmina, and a side trip to the Kakum Rain Forest and canopy
walk. Throughout the trip
we will have lectures and demonstrations by Ghanaian professors, performers,
and artists. |
