Independent Study Opportunities: Summer & Fall 2007

If you would like to discuss an Independent Study Project in any of these areas, please contact Professor Mary Kay Schleiter (email: mks "at" uwp.edu)

Career Industries Program Evaluation
The Career Industries is a local organization dedicated to assisting people with disabilities in finding and carrying out jobs. We completed a Literature Review during the Fall 2006 semester. A meeting with the organization is scheduled for April 24th at the Center for Community Partnership to discuss our next steps.

Main Gallery Project Assessment
Main Gallery is a summer program designed to improve children's art appreciation and job skills. We will assess the effectiveness of this summer program for changes in art appreciation levels, job skills, and diversity sophistication level. The Advanced Program Evaluation class has been working on designing the program evaluation. The Childhood & Society Class and Independent Study students will conduct data collection during the upcoming summer months, and analyses will continue into the fall semester.

Kenosha Darfur Project
Darfur, Sudan, is suffering continuing genocidal violence. An interfaith group in Kenosha is trying to identify how they can contribute to the solution. They need help with research on current human rights work in Darfur. See Professor Mary Kay Schleiter if you would like to work on this.

Bethany Apartment Program Evaluation
Bethany Apartments is a support system which provides transitional housing, support, and training to women and children who are victims of domestic abuse. The residents are allowed to stay up to two years in the apartments while gaining job skills and independence. Interviews of current and former residents will be conducted over the fall semester. Data collection and analysis will continue in upcoming semesters.

Diversity Circles : Program Assessment
The Diversity Circles program is a 1 credit SOCA class designed to help students develop diversity awareness and ethnic tolerance. The project assessment and program evaluation is in the planning stages and a Literature Review is currently being written. Further research will be conducted during the Fall 2007 and Spring 2008 semesters.

Diversity Circles : Prison Program
The Diversity Circles program is planning a pilot project to examine the effects of the program on local correctional institutions. The program is focused on lessening racial conflicts between inmates as well as reducing tensions between inmates and guards. The project is still in the planning stages. We are working on a Literature Review and Study Design as a part of a grant proposal. Research will continue during the summer, fall, and spring semesters. Diversity Circles were previously implemented at the Racine Correctional Institution, and are now going to be reintroduced and evaluated.

Hunger Task Force Project Assessment
The Hunger Task Force is focused on reducing and preventing hunger in Southeastern Wisconsin. The Task Force has requested an assessment of the extent of hunger in Kenosha County. This project is in the planning stages; a Literature Review needs to be researched and written, and further research will be scheduled for the upcoming semesters.

Boys' and Girls' Club Project Assessment
The Boys and Girls Club of Kenosha offers many programs for children in the area. The Computer Science Program is a summer program designed to improve children's computer skills. We will assess the effectiveness of this summer program. The Advanced Program Evaluation class has been working on designing the program evaluation. The Childhood & Society Class and Independent Study students will conduct data collection during the upcoming summer months, and analyses will continue into the fall semester.
