Proficiency Testing & CertificationThere are several ways in which the Modern Languages Department cooperates with offices on and off campus to test and certify students' proficiency in the foreign languages taught at UW-Parkside. Students wishing to enroll in a foreign language course will first need to verify correct placement at the appropriate level of instruction. The Prescriptive Advising and Testing Office has information on dates and times of proficiency examinations. Students will be placed at the appropriate course level on the basis of the placement test results. Proper placement is an important prerequisite for academic success in the course. Evaluation of student performance in academic work undertaken in Modern Languages Department courses is the principal means by which student progress and proficiency in foreign language study is documented. Students have several opportunities available, in addition, to seek independent evaluation and certification of proficiency in a foreign language. Such independent verification of language proficiency, usually documented by certificate, is an invaluable and often universally recognized dossier enhancement. The proficiency examinations include, for the respective languages: GERMANThere are three general language proficiency examinations leading to certification in German. The examinations include written and oral parts and are administered through the Goethe-Institut, the international German cultural agency.
