Things you ought to be asking yourself or an Informed Other:

An Informed Other is the Chair or another professor, or perhaps the Department Secretary, who is willing to sign your registration materials that what they tell you is valid. We don't mean ask another student who claims to know.

  • I need a class registration number.

It's the first number listed on the schedule of classes for each class.

  • Do I need this pre-requisite?

You'll need to find the class instructor to determine that. Or speak to an Informed Other.

  • What should I take?

First, be sure to take at least one of your required classes if you're a major. If you leave those till the end, you'll often find they're overcrowded and you can't get in. That could mean you'll have to wait a semester to graduate.

  • I have a time conflict between two classes, but I need them both.

There's a form, probably available in our department office, that both instructors should sign, indicating that you have made arrangements with them to effectively make up the time the conflict will cause you to miss.

  • I want to take Independent Study or Directed Research.

If undergraduate, you should see the supervising professor. This should be a professor who knows you and your work, with whom you have taken a class. If graduate, you should see the Graduate Director as well as the professor, to be sure that your choice is acceptable for your program. In each case you will need to fill out a form, available in the Sociology office, indicating your plans for study, and signed by both you and the supervising professor.

  • I asked for a grade change, and it hasn't come through.

Get an advisor, the Department Secretary, a professor, to help you locate the paperwork in the system. Paperwork does get lost. Don't wait till graduation to do this. Check your registration a few weeks into each semester. Check grade changes a few weeks after they have been sent through. Pat can help you with this if things are hopping in the office.

  • I don't know anybody. I'm new here.

Come to a small group gathering in jeanne's and Pat's offices: SBS B326 and SBS Bxxx.

    • Tuesday-Thursday: 1:00 - 2:15 p.m.
    • Wednesday: 4:00 - 6:45 p.m.
