SELECTED RESEARCH PROJECTS
Fall 2004. Kenosha County Gun-Related Violence Project. This project involves training students to read and code criminal case files involving guns for Kenosha County. Our objective is to determine what type of offender is most likely to utilize handguns and how we can quell the use of handgun violence in Kenosha County, Wisconsin.
Spring 1993. Racial and Economic Assessment Survey for the Five Oaks Community. I was asked by President Jessie Gooding of the Dayton Branch of the NAACP to determine if the installation of "Brick Gates" is providing more of an inconvenience to the area where African-American residents live.
Spring 1992. Police Misconduct Survey. This project consisted of two survey techniques. First, 1,000 Ohio residents and 1,000 Ohio police officers were telephone surveyed about their attitudes toward police misconduct. Secondly, citizens and officers who have been involved in police brutality cases were interviewed face-to-face. (With In Soo Son and Mark Davis)
Fall 1992. Canvasser. During the Mayoral and Aldermanic campaign in Chicago (1982-83), I worked as a Canvasser for the 29th Ward located on Chicago's westside. I went from door-to-door conducting face-to-face interviews for the upcoming election. These data collected were used to determine areas of strong and weak support for Mayor Harold Washington and Alderman Danny K. Davis.
Spring 1991. Survey of Racial and Ethnic Members of the American Sociological Association. This project consisted of two stages: 1) a self-administered questionnaire mailed to a sample of racial and ethnic minority sociologists who are members of the ASA, and 2) telephone interviews with leaders of professional associations that include racial and ethnic minority sociologists. (With Greg Weiss)
Summer 1990. Characteristics of Growth in a Small Village: The Case of Yellow Springs. This project involved conducting a telephone survey of 400 residents of Yellow Springs, Ohio to determine their attitudes about growth and development in their village.
Spring 1984. Research Assistant, Howard University. The Washington, DC Social Psychophysiology Project (WSPP). The principle aim of the WSPP was to determine the impact of stressful socio-environmental stimuli on variation in anxiety, adrenal hormone secretion, and blood pressure in urban African-Americans. As a Research Assistant, I obtained practical training in medical and psycho-physiological research. I co-developed the questionnaire that was used for survey interviews.
