Medicine has been described as both an art and a science. The pre-health programs at UW-Parkside reflect this dual perspective. Graduates are very well prepared as demonstrated by the high success rate of UW-Parkside graduates in admission to professional schools. This success is due to a well developed program of advising, which includes course selection, admission test preparation, application assistance, and practice interviews.

The Degree Program

Professional schools generally have no specific preference for a major. The overwhelming majority of pre-health students at UW-Parkside (and elsewhere) choose biological sciences or chemistry as their major area of study, but students who choose other majors can be successful as well in the health professions. Professional school requirements are similar for students preparing for careers in all fields of medicine and differences between specific programs (Dentistry, Optometry, etc.) are discussed with students as they begin their pre-professional studies. Students who select biology as their major area of study may choose a standard four-year or an accelerated three-year program in biological sciences. The latter is a rigorous, but rewarding program that requires faculty approval and a strong commitment on the part of the student.

Course of Study

To prepare for health professional schools, most students at UW-Parkside major in biological sciences. This major consists of a minimum of 42 credits in biological science, with additional courses in mathematics, chemistry and physics. A series of pre-health elective courses are suggested for students planning to obtain a B.S. degree in biological sciences, while simultaneously fulfilling admission requirements for most professional schools. The recommended electives are courses that are beneficial for successful applicants to professional schools.
